About me
Vance Sohn, MD, MBA, FACS, FSSO, is an experienced surgical oncologist and Director of the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He specializes in treating skin cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, and sarcomas using advanced robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgical techniques.
With a career spanning more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, Dr. Sohn has cared for patients in both world-class medical centers and remote combat zones. He also trained military surgeons in trauma and battlefield medicine, experiences that shaped his calm, focused approach to complex care and his deep commitment to serving others.
After his military service, Dr. Sohn served as Vice President of Medical Affairs at a biotechnology company focused on immuno-oncology research. This role gave him a unique perspective on the future of cancer care and strengthened his belief in the power of innovation and clinical trials to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Sohn believes the best care starts with trust, compassion, and education. He partners closely with patients and their families, ensuring they fully understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and path forward. He is known for being honest, attentive, and fully committed to each patient from diagnosis through survivorship.
As Director of the Cancer Institute, Dr. Sohn is leading the efforts to expand multidisciplinary care, grow the team of specialists, and advance clinical research to offer patients the most comprehensive and cutting-edge treatment options.
Dr. Sohn earned his medical degree from Georgetown University, completed his general surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center, and completed a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also holds an Executive MBA from the University of Tennessee.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, and an ACS Health Policy Scholar. Dr. Sohn is also a proud recipient of the Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award for his leadership in medical education.
Philosophy of Care
“Each patient’s journey with cancer is deeply personal, and I strive to provide care that is not only medically excellent but also empathetic and individualized. No two cancers, and no two patients, are alike. I take time to understand each person’s values, goals, and concerns, and I work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver tailored, evidence-based treatment plans. My role is not just to operate, but to guide, support, and advocate for my patients every step of the way.”
